Southwestern Eye Center's roots date as far back as 1954 with the establishment of Dr. Rex Weaver's private practice in Mesa Arizona. Dr. Weaver set a precedent
for providing care in Arizona's rural communities.
In 1982 Dr. L. Lothaire Bluth joined Dr. Weaver and in 1983 implemented the concept of offering
outpatient surgical care on site. In addition to being more efficient and cost effective, outpatient
surgery offers patients care in an atmosphere that is comfortable and familiar. It allows them to return home
following surgery and eliminates unnecessary hospital expenses.
Today we have surgery centers in Mesa, Casa Grande, Safford, Nogales, Yuma, Prescott, Phoenix, Sun City, Sierra Vista, Lake Havasu City, Lakeside, Cottonwood, and Kingman.
With Dr. Bluth came the addition of optometrists to what had been an ophthalmologist only practice.
Dr. Bluth believes that the combination of the two professions affords the patients a more comprehensive range
of eye care.
Southwestern Eye Center's optometrists provide care in general family practice optometry, diabetic
eye care management, co-management of cataract care, and glaucoma care. Our optometrists work within the full scope of their Arizona licensure.
Southwestern Eye Center's medical staff includes a group of ophthalmologists with a diverse range of specialties.
The full time staff provides expertise in the areas of cataract and implant surgery, treatment of glaucoma, diabetes management,
corneal transplants, refractive surgery, medical and surgical retina, and laser vision correction.
