Community Involvement

Southwestern Medical Foundation

The Southwestern Medical Foundation was established in 1993 by L. Lothaire Bluth, M.D. to provide medical and surgical eye care, vision aids and other services to needy individuals with visual impairments. The objective of Southwestern Medical Foundation is to make a positive impact on individual lives and communities through programs that provide eye care services and education to under served areas.

Southwestern Medical Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable 501 (c) (3) foundation funded through private contributions and government grants. The generous donations received support participation in programs such as "Gift of Sight Day" and "Mission Cataract USA," which provide free eye examinations and cataract surgery to individuals in need.

The Foundation has been involved in medical missions that make modern eye care available to rural areas. As an additional service, the foundation offers health care screenings, educational materials and a speakers' bureau to senior groups. The pursuit of health care careers is encouraged through scholarship awards to deserving high school seniors.

The goal of Southwestern Medical Foundation is to offer a wide range of services that will meet the unique needs of individuals and communities throughout Arizona and the Southwest.

The Foundation's Board of Directors reviews applications for support submitted from a variety of sources. The programs selected are chosen in order to maximize the number of beneficiaries and for the impact they will have on the lives of the recipients.

Individuals who contribute to the foundation can be confident that their money will go directly for charitable purposes. The Board of Directors and staff volunteer their time and efforts and receive no compensation for their work.

To make a donation, please call 480-892-8400 and ask for Judy Thompson, or mail a donation to:

All donations will be acknowledged with a written receipt from Southwestern Medical Foundation. Tax I.D. 86-0716576

You will receive satisfaction in knowing your donations will have a positive impact on the lives of so many others, whether it's helping a young child with vision problems whose family couldn't afford the necessary care or providing cataract surgery to a needy elderly patient who hasn't seen clearly in years. Other rewards are less obvious but are equally important. Education programs stress the prevention of eye disease by encouraging early eye care treatment. The scholarship awards supported by the foundation help pay for the educational and training of medical professionals of the future.
