Mark R. Barakat, M.D.
Dr. Mark Barakat is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in diseases of the vitreous, retina and macula, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, macular holes and puckers and retinal detachment.
Dr. Barakat completed a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic after serving as chief ophthalmology resident at Hahnemann University Hospital. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Barakat is licensed to practice in Arizona and Ohio.
After receiving his undergraduate degree in computer science at Duke University, Dr. Barakat spent one year in a research laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania developing imaging modules for the analysis of retinal photographs. He subsequently obtained his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and completed a medical internship at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Barakat has published numerous articles and presented at national meetings on subjects pertaining to retina research.
Dr. Barakat is fluent in German and conversational Spanish. He enjoys music, philosophy, and tinkering with computers, but above all, he loves spending time with his wife, Monika, and their two daughters.
