Botox® Treatments
Botox® injections are used to selectively relax the muscles in the face and can eliminate or significantly diminish "frown lines," "crow's feet" and forehead folds. Botox® injections can not only smooth out these areas, but also help prevent these wrinkles from recurring. Botox® has been used for over twenty years and is FDA approved for the treatment of blepharospasm (an uncontrolled spasming of both eyelid muscles) and hemifacial spasms. The adverse effects of Botox® are few and uncommon, but localized bruising and droopy upper eyelids are both risks. The unfortunate news about Botox® is that its action is only temporary, usually lasting 3-6 months. However, most people need injections less often with time.
Patients are understandably concerned about the safety of such a treatment. This is a good question since Botulinum toxin may be associated with a deadly form of food poisoning known as botulism. The amount of toxin used for these injections is a minute portion of what must be ingested with food poisoning. Botox® acts only where injected and has no effect elsewhere in the body. Botox® is a safe, effective, non-surgical, well tolerated and enthusiastically accepted method of reducing "frown lines," "crow's feet" and forehead wrinkles.
