Laser Skin Resurfacing

The CO2 laser is a high-energy infrared beam of light that is used to gently vaporize the top damaged layers of skin resulting in tightening of the underlying skin. This allows the body to generate new skin and produce new collagen turning the clock back without invasive deep surgery. The skin is removed layer by layer providing more control than with other procedures such as dermabrasion or chemical peels.

It generally takes nine days for the skin to grow back, but improvement continues for three to six months after resurfacing. The results appear to be long lasting, usually from five to fifteen years, depending on severity of skin damage.

Complications seen with laser resurfacing include scarring, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation (too much or too little pigmentation), and infection. The risk of these complications is minimized by careful selection of patients undergoing the procedure. Dr. Ghafouri wil be pleased to see if you are a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing.

Brow Lifts

Brow and forehead lifts are surgical procedures done to raise droopy eyebrows and smooth forehead wrinkles, often resulting in the decrease of excess eyelid skin and opening of the eyes. Incisions are made either at the hairline, behind the hairline, in some cases, above the brow or in the mid-forehead. Excess skin and tissue is removed and fine sutures or staples are applied to close the incisions.

It is common to experience swelling and bruising in the 10 days following surgery. Some patients also see bruising in the cheek and eye area. For most patients, the recovery time will not exceed two weeks, but patients may still be advised to avoid strenuous activities for longer periods. You will be permitted to wash your hair shortly after the surgery. Please contact an office near you to schedule a free, personal consultation with Dr. Ghafouri to see if you may be a good candidate for a brow or forehead lift.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is designed to improve the function or appearance of the eyes or eyelids. Blepharoplasty is the most common eyelid procedure that removes excess tissue from your eyelids, to restore a more rested, natural, youthful appearance to your eyes and face.

The procedure consists of the doctor making incisions that follow the natural lines and creases in your eyelids. Then the excess tissue is removed to achieve a better shape. The incisions will be sutured, leaving hairline scars that begin to fade in days. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia. It could take anywhere from one to two hours. You are likely to have more than one follow-up visit with your doctor. Occasionally, a second minor procedure may be required to remove more tissue. Southwestern Eye Center has two doctors who perform blepharoplasty: Dr. Bluth and Dr. Ghafouri.

Botox® Injections

Botox® injections are used to selectively relax the muscles in the face and can eliminate or significantly diminish "frown lines," "crow's feet" and forehead folds. Botox® injections can not only smooth out these areas, but also help prevent these wrinkles from recurring. Botox® has been used for over twenty years and is FDA approved for the treatment of blepharospasm (an uncontrolled spasming of both eyelid muscles) and hemifacial spasms. The adverse effects of Botox® are few and uncommon, but localized bruising and droopy upper eyelids are both risks. The unfortunate news about Botox® is that its action is only temporary, usually lasting 3-6 months. However, most people need injections less often with time.

Patients are understandably concerned about the safety of such a treatment. This is a good question since Botulinum toxin may be associated with a deadly form of food poisoning known as botulism. The amount of toxin used for these injections is a minute portion of what must be ingested with food poisoning. Botox® acts only where injected and has no effect elsewhere in the body. Botox® is a safe, effective, non-surgical, well tolerated and enthusiastically accepted method of reducing "frown lines," "crow's feet" and forehead wrinkles.
