The Average Cost of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery costs can vary, depending on your insurance, the type of lens you choose, and your vision goals after surgery. In most cases, cataract surgery falls into two categories:

1. Insurance-Covered Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is considered a medically necessary procedure, therefore most insurance providers (including Medicare) cover the standard treatment required to fix the medical problem. A monofocal lens meets that requirement.

A monofocal lens is a single-focus implant. It replaces your natural lens and restores clarity at one fixed distance, typically set for distance vision. It does not actively adjust focus or provide multiple ranges of vision.

2. Advanced Cataract Surgery Options (Out-of-Pocket Upgrades)

If you want to reduce your dependence on glasses, you may choose to upgrade your lenses. These are not covered by insurance but offer more visual freedom.

Multifocal / Trifocal / Extended Range Lenses

→ Around $4,250 per eye
→ Designed for distance, intermediate, and near vision

Toric Lenses (Astigmatism Correction)

→ Around $3,295 per eye
→ Improves clarity and reduces astigmatism

Enhanced Monofocal (Astigmatism Correction)

→ Around $1,995 per eye
→ Better clarity at one distance with reduced astigmatism
