Children should not wait until they can read the classroom board to have a comprehensive eye exam. The American Optometric Association recommends a baseline exam at about 6 to 12 months, another thorough in-person exam between ages 3 and 5, and continued comprehensive eye care for school-aged children, even if they pass a screening. If your child failed a screening, is squinting, rubbing their eyes often, covering one eye, complaining of headaches, or struggling with visual tasks, schedule sooner.

Importance of Eye Exams

Please bring your child’s photo ID if applicable, insurance cards, current glasses or contact lens information, a list of medications, and any outside records or referrals. If you think dilation may be needed, bring sunglasses for afterward and consider arranging a ride if bright light tends to bother your child after eye exams. If your child is right at a provider’s age cutoff or still learning letters and shapes, call ahead so the office can confirm the best scheduling option.
